Background of the Study

Burn injuries are highly susceptible to infections due to the destruction of the skin, which serves as the body's natural barrier against pathogens. Proper infection control practices are essential in burn units to prevent complications such as sepsis, which can be fatal. Nurses are responsible for implementing infection control protocols, including proper wound cleaning, dressing changes, and maintaining a sterile environment.

In Kogi State, burn units may face challenges due to limited resources, high patient volumes, and varying levels of staff training. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of nurses regarding infection control in burn units and their adherence to the prescribed guidelines and protocols.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of infection control in burn units, there may be significant gaps in nurses' knowledge and adherence to infection control practices, leading to increased risks of infection and compromised patient outcomes. This study seeks to identify these gaps and assess the current level of adherence to infection control practices in burn units within Kogi State healthcare facilities.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge among nurses about infection control in burn units in Kogi State healthcare facilities.

  2. To evaluate the extent to which nurses adhere to infection control protocols in burn units.

  3. To identify factors that influence nurses' adherence to infection control practices in burn units.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding infection control in burn units in Kogi State healthcare facilities?

  2. To what extent do nurses adhere to infection control protocols in burn units?

  3. What factors influence nurses' adherence to infection control practices in burn units?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kogi State healthcare facilities have insufficient knowledge of infection control in burn units.

  2. Nurses in Kogi State do not adhere fully to infection control protocols in burn units.

  3. Factors such as inadequate training, resources, and staffing affect nurses' adherence to infection control practices in burn units.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in burn units within Kogi State healthcare facilities. Limitations may include variations in adherence levels across different hospitals, as well as challenges in measuring adherence accurately.

Definitions of Terms

  • Infection Control: Practices aimed at preventing the spread of infection, including proper hand hygiene, sterilization, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Burn Unit: A specialized unit in a healthcare facility designed for the treatment and management of burn patients.
