Background of the Study

Effective pain management in pediatric patients is a crucial component of healthcare, as children are especially vulnerable to both acute and chronic pain. However, pain management in children presents unique challenges due to factors such as communication difficulties, the need for age-appropriate interventions, and parental concerns. In Borno State, where healthcare infrastructure may be underdeveloped, these challenges are compounded, leading to inadequate pain management for pediatric patients.

Nurses, as the primary caregivers, play a central role in pain assessment and management in children. This study evaluates the barriers to effective pain management in pediatric patients in Borno State, focusing on how nurses' knowledge, resources, and institutional support influence their ability to provide adequate pain relief.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate pain management in pediatric patients is a significant issue in Borno State, where many children suffer unnecessarily from untreated or poorly managed pain. This study aims to identify the barriers that prevent effective pain management in pediatric patients and to explore how nurses can be better supported to address these challenges.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the barriers to effective pain management in pediatric patients in Borno State hospitals.

  2. To assess the role of nurses in managing pediatric pain and the challenges they face.

  3. To evaluate the impact of these barriers on pediatric patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main barriers to effective pain management in pediatric patients in Borno State hospitals?

  2. How do nurses assess and manage pain in pediatric patients in Borno State hospitals?

  3. How do these barriers affect the outcomes and satisfaction of pediatric patients in Borno State hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Lack of training and inadequate resources are significant barriers to effective pain management in pediatric patients in Borno State hospitals.

  2. Nurses in Borno State hospitals face challenges in providing effective pain management to pediatric patients due to these barriers.

  3. The barriers to effective pain management negatively impact pediatric patient outcomes and satisfaction in Borno State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on pediatric patients in healthcare facilities in Borno State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing data from remote areas and variability in the availability of resources across hospitals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric Pain Management: The process of assessing and managing pain in children using age-appropriate methods and medications.

  • Pain Management Barriers: Factors that hinder the effective assessment and management of pain, including lack of resources, training, and appropriate interventions.
