Background of the Study

Skilled birth attendance, defined as the presence of a qualified healthcare provider during childbirth, is a critical factor in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. In rural areas of Nigeria, however, access to skilled birth attendants remains limited due to factors such as distance to healthcare facilities, cultural practices, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.

Adamawa State, located in northeastern Nigeria, faces significant challenges in ensuring that women in rural areas have access to skilled birth attendants. This study will assess the barriers to skilled birth attendance among rural women in Adamawa State, identifying socio-cultural, economic, and infrastructural factors that contribute to the underutilization of skilled birth services.

Statement of the Problem

Despite national efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, rural women in Adamawa State face numerous barriers to accessing skilled birth attendants. The lack of skilled healthcare professionals and inadequate transportation systems often force women to deliver at home, putting both their health and the health of their babies at risk. This study aims to identify the barriers that prevent rural women from seeking skilled birth attendance in Adamawa State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the barriers to skilled birth attendance among rural women in Adamawa State.

  2. To explore the socio-cultural and economic factors that influence women’s decisions to seek skilled birth attendance.

  3. To evaluate the role of healthcare infrastructure in improving access to skilled birth attendance for rural women.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main barriers to skilled birth attendance among rural women in Adamawa State?

  2. How do socio-cultural factors influence the decision of rural women to seek skilled birth attendance?

  3. What role does healthcare infrastructure play in improving access to skilled birth attendance for rural women in Adamawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Socio-cultural barriers significantly affect rural women’s decisions to seek skilled birth attendance in Adamawa State.

  2. Economic factors such as poverty and transportation challenges hinder access to skilled birth attendance in Adamawa State.

  3. Improving healthcare infrastructure will increase the utilization of skilled birth attendance among rural women in Adamawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on rural communities within Adamawa State. Limitations include the potential for biases in self-reported data and variability in healthcare infrastructure across different regions of the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Skilled Birth Attendance: The presence of a trained healthcare provider, such as a nurse or doctor, during childbirth.

  • Barriers to Skilled Birth Attendance: Obstacles that prevent women from accessing skilled healthcare during childbirth, including cultural, economic, and logistical challenges.
