Background of the Study

Maternal mortality remains a major health challenge in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. The provision of antenatal education by healthcare providers, particularly nurses, has been shown to significantly reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Antenatal education empowers women with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their pregnancy, identify warning signs of complications, and seek timely medical help.

In Zamfara State, where maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the country, improving the quality and scope of antenatal education is crucial. Nurses, as key healthcare providers during antenatal visits, are uniquely positioned to educate pregnant women about the importance of regular check-ups, proper nutrition, and recognizing danger signs during pregnancy. This study will explore the role of nurses in reducing maternal mortality through effective antenatal education in Zamfara State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to reduce maternal mortality in Nigeria, many women in Zamfara State still lack access to quality antenatal education, which can result in delayed detection of complications and high maternal mortality. This study will assess the impact of nurse-led antenatal education in improving maternal outcomes and reducing maternal mortality in Zamfara State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nurses’ antenatal education on reducing maternal mortality in Zamfara State.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurses in educating pregnant women about pregnancy-related complications and their prevention.

  3. To identify barriers that prevent nurses from providing adequate antenatal education in Zamfara State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is nurse-led antenatal education in reducing maternal mortality in Zamfara State?

  2. What are the key components of antenatal education provided by nurses to pregnant women in Zamfara State?

  3. What challenges do nurses face in providing antenatal education to reduce maternal mortality in Zamfara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led antenatal education significantly reduces maternal mortality rates in Zamfara State.

  2. Nurses provide essential education on pregnancy-related complications and prevention to pregnant women in Zamfara State.

  3. Barriers such as lack of resources and training significantly hinder the provision of effective antenatal education by nurses in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on antenatal education provided by nurses in healthcare facilities across Zamfara State. Limitations may include differences in healthcare infrastructure and resources across different regions of the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Antenatal Education: Education provided to pregnant women during antenatal visits to prepare them for a safe pregnancy and childbirth.

  • Maternal Mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after delivery, regardless of the duration and site of the pregnancy.
