Background of the Study

Neonatal resuscitation is a critical intervention for newborns who fail to initiate or maintain adequate breathing after birth. Adherence to established neonatal resuscitation protocols is vital to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, factors such as training, knowledge, and available resources may affect nurses' ability to consistently follow these protocols.

In Benue State, where maternal and neonatal mortality rates are high, ensuring that nurses adhere to neonatal resuscitation protocols can make a significant difference in the survival and health outcomes of newborns. This study seeks to evaluate the adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols by nurses in Benue State hospitals and explore factors that may influence this adherence.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of neonatal resuscitation protocols, adherence to these protocols by nurses in Benue State hospitals remains unclear. Non-adherence can lead to preventable neonatal deaths and long-term health issues. This study will assess how well nurses in Benue State follow neonatal resuscitation protocols and the factors that influence their adherence.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols among nurses in Benue State hospitals.

  2. To identify factors influencing nurses’ adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols in Benue State.

  3. To assess the impact of adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols on neonatal outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent do nurses in Benue State adhere to neonatal resuscitation protocols?

  2. What factors influence nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols in Benue State hospitals?

  3. How does adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols affect neonatal health outcomes in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Benue State hospitals do not fully adhere to neonatal resuscitation protocols.

  2. Knowledge, training, and available resources significantly influence nurses' adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols.

  3. Adherence to neonatal resuscitation protocols improves neonatal health outcomes in Benue State hospitals.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on neonatal resuscitation practices in hospitals across Benue State. Limitations may include the variability in the nurses' training and experience, as well as differences in hospital resources.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Protocols: Standardized guidelines for the emergency care of newborns who experience respiratory distress or cardiac arrest.

  • Adherence: The extent to which nurses follow established protocols and guidelines in their practice.
