Background of the Study
Neonatal jaundice is a common condition among newborns, characterized by the yellowing of the skin and eyes due to high bilirubin levels. While often benign, if left untreated, it can lead to severe complications such as brain damage (kernicterus). Early identification and timely intervention are critical in managing neonatal jaundice. Nurse-led interventions, such as educating mothers, monitoring bilirubin levels, and facilitating early treatment (e.g., phototherapy), can significantly reduce the incidence and severity of this condition.
In Katsina State, where healthcare resources may be limited, nurses often play a pivotal role in identifying jaundice early, educating families, and ensuring proper care is provided. This study aims to assess the impact of nurse-led interventions on reducing neonatal jaundice cases in the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
Statement of the Problem
Neonatal jaundice remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among newborns in Katsina State. Despite the availability of medical care, delayed diagnosis and inadequate intervention often result in complications. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing the incidence of neonatal jaundice in Katsina State.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing neonatal jaundice cases at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
To evaluate the role of nurses in educating mothers about neonatal jaundice prevention and management.
To explore how nurse-led interventions impact the timely diagnosis and treatment of neonatal jaundice.
Research Questions
How effective are nurse-led interventions in reducing neonatal jaundice cases at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State?
What role do nurses play in educating mothers about neonatal jaundice in Katsina State?
How do nurse-led interventions affect the early diagnosis and treatment of neonatal jaundice?
Research Hypotheses
Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce the incidence of neonatal jaundice in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
Nurses’ education of mothers contributes to improved early identification and treatment of neonatal jaundice.
Nurse-led interventions improve neonatal jaundice outcomes through early diagnosis and treatment in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on neonatal jaundice cases at the Federal Medical Centre in Katsina State. Limitations may include variability in the nurses' experience and training, as well as challenges in obtaining data from multiple departments.
