Background of the Study

Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and youth globally, with mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse often serving as significant risk factors. In Taraba State, the prevalence of suicide among at-risk youth has raised concerns regarding mental health care and suicide prevention strategies. Nurses, who are frequently the first point of contact for patients in both healthcare facilities and community settings, play a pivotal role in suicide prevention. Through screening, early detection, and intervention, nurses can help identify at-risk individuals and provide the necessary support to prevent suicides.

Despite the critical role of nurses in suicide prevention, there is a lack of research on their specific contributions and challenges in addressing this issue in Taraba State. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in suicide prevention among at-risk youth in Taraba State, examining their awareness, practices, and the effectiveness of their interventions.

Statement of the Problem

Suicide among youth in Taraba State is a growing concern, yet there are limited suicide prevention programs, and the role of nurses in identifying and preventing suicide remains under-researched.
