Background of the Study

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers among women worldwide, including in Nigeria, where it is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Early detection through screening and awareness can significantly improve survival rates and outcomes for women diagnosed with breast cancer. In Bauchi State, there is a growing need for healthcare professionals, especially nurses, to be equipped with adequate knowledge on breast cancer detection and screening practices. Nurses often serve as the first point of contact for patients, and their role in providing education, conducting screenings, and referring patients for further investigations is crucial.

Despite advancements in healthcare, studies have indicated that many Nigerian women still lack awareness about breast cancer and its early detection methods (Ogunleye et al., 2023). Nurses are in a strategic position to bridge this gap by educating patients and ensuring they undergo regular screenings. However, it remains unclear whether the knowledge nurses possess directly influences the effectiveness of breast cancer detection and screening practices in Bauchi State. This study aims to assess the extent to which nurses' knowledge influences their ability to perform early breast cancer detection and screening.

Statement of the Problem

In Bauchi State, the lack of widespread knowledge among healthcare providers, particularly nurses, about breast cancer screening methods may contribute to late diagnoses and poor outcomes. With breast cancer incidence on the rise, there is an urgent need for nursing professionals to be well-versed in early detection techniques. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurses' knowledge on early breast cancer detection and screening practices in Bauchi State and determine how this knowledge influences patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge nurses possess regarding breast cancer detection and screening practices in Bauchi State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of nurses' knowledge on the frequency and effectiveness of breast cancer screening in Bauchi State hospitals.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurses' knowledge and improving breast cancer screening practices in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding breast cancer detection and screening practices in Bauchi State?

  2. How does the level of knowledge of nurses influence breast cancer detection and screening practices in Bauchi State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve nurses' knowledge of breast cancer detection and screening in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' knowledge of breast cancer detection and screening practices positively impacts the frequency and effectiveness of breast cancer screenings in Bauchi State hospitals.

  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of breast cancer and the early detection of breast cancer in Bauchi State.

  3. Enhanced training and education programs for nurses will improve their knowledge and practices related to breast cancer detection and screening.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses working in Bauchi State hospitals and healthcare facilities. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported knowledge and the variability in healthcare infrastructure across different regions of the state.

Definitions of Terms

  • Breast Cancer Detection: The process of identifying breast cancer at an early stage through methods such as mammography, self-examination, and clinical examination.

  • Screening Practices: Routine checks and procedures performed to detect early signs of breast cancer in asymptomatic individuals.

  • Nurses' Knowledge: The understanding, awareness, and competency of nurses regarding breast cancer detection, screening practices, and related healthcare education.
