Background of the Study
In many parts of Nigeria, including Bauchi State, cultural beliefs and practices have a significant influence on access to maternal healthcare. Cultural barriers such as traditional birth practices, gender roles, and stigmas associated with seeking modern medical care often deter women from seeking the necessary healthcare services during pregnancy and childbirth (Danjuma et al., 2023). These barriers contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality rates, as women in rural areas may prefer to deliver at home with the assistance of traditional birth attendants rather than seeking care at healthcare facilities (Aliyu & Ismaila, 2024).
Nurses play a crucial role in bridging the gap between cultural practices and modern healthcare approaches. They are often the first point of contact for pregnant women and can provide education, support, and culturally sensitive care that addresses both the medical needs and cultural concerns of patients. Understanding how nurses in Bauchi State navigate and overcome cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access is essential for improving maternal health outcomes and ensuring that women receive the care they need for safe deliveries.
This study seeks to investigate the role of nurses in overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State, with the aim of identifying strategies that can enhance the delivery of culturally sensitive care and improve maternal health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
In Bauchi State, maternal healthcare access is often hindered by cultural barriers such as traditional birthing practices, reluctance to seek medical care due to stigma, and limited knowledge of modern maternal healthcare. Nurses, however, play an important role in addressing these cultural barriers by providing education and support. Yet, there is limited research on how nurses specifically overcome these barriers in the context of maternal healthcare in Bauchi State. Understanding this dynamic is crucial for developing strategies to improve maternal health services and increase healthcare access for women in culturally diverse communities.
Objectives of the Study
To explore the role of nurses in overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State.
To identify the strategies employed by nurses to provide culturally sensitive care to pregnant women in Bauchi State.
To assess the challenges nurses face in overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State.
Research Questions
What role do nurses play in overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State?
What strategies do nurses employ to provide culturally sensitive maternal care in Bauchi State?
What challenges do nurses face in overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses significantly contribute to overcoming cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State.
The strategies employed by nurses in Bauchi State significantly improve maternal healthcare access among pregnant women.
Cultural barriers to maternal healthcare access in Bauchi State present significant challenges for nurses in providing effective care.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in maternal healthcare settings in Bauchi State, examining their roles, strategies, and challenges in overcoming cultural barriers to healthcare access. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and the challenge of generalizing findings due to the diverse cultural beliefs within different regions of Bauchi State.
