Background of the Study
Telehealth has revolutionized healthcare delivery by providing remote care and continuous patient monitoring, particularly in underserved and remote regions. In Nigeria, the use of telehealth for remote patient monitoring has been identified as a potential solution to address the shortage of healthcare professionals, especially in rural areas like Sokoto State (Aliyu & Umar, 2023). Telehealth utilizes various technological tools such as mobile phones, video consultations, and wearables to facilitate remote healthcare services. Nurses, as frontline healthcare workers, play a central role in telehealth implementation and management, particularly in the monitoring of chronic conditions, medication adherence, and post-discharge follow-ups (Abubakar & Ibrahim, 2023).
In Sokoto State, where healthcare infrastructure is limited and access to specialists is often a challenge, telehealth provides a significant opportunity to bridge the gap in healthcare delivery. Despite its potential, the acceptance and utilization of telehealth services by nurses remain under-researched, especially in terms of their knowledge, attitudes, and practical application in remote patient monitoring (Usman & Musa, 2024). Evaluating nurses’ knowledge and acceptance of telehealth is essential to understanding the barriers to its successful implementation and identifying ways to improve its adoption.
This study aims to assess the knowledge and acceptance of telehealth by nurses in Sokoto State, specifically in the context of remote patient monitoring, and identify factors influencing their willingness to adopt telehealth practices in their daily nursing care.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, the integration of telehealth into healthcare practices has faced numerous challenges, including limited awareness, inadequate training, and resistance to new technologies. Nurses, who are often responsible for direct patient care, play a critical role in ensuring the effective implementation of telehealth. However, limited studies exist on their knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to the adoption of telehealth for remote patient monitoring in the state. This gap in understanding may hinder the effective implementation of telehealth programs and compromise the quality of care provided to patients in remote areas.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate nurses' knowledge of telehealth and remote patient monitoring in Sokoto State.
To assess nurses’ acceptance of telehealth in providing patient care in Sokoto State.
To identify the factors influencing nurses’ adoption of telehealth in remote patient monitoring.
Research Questions
What is the level of nurses' knowledge about telehealth and remote patient monitoring in Sokoto State?
What is the level of nurses' acceptance of telehealth in patient care in Sokoto State?
What factors influence nurses’ adoption of telehealth in remote patient monitoring in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Sokoto State have limited knowledge of telehealth and remote patient monitoring.
Nurses in Sokoto State exhibit moderate acceptance of telehealth for remote patient monitoring.
Knowledge, training, and technological infrastructure significantly influence nurses' acceptance and adoption of telehealth in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses working in hospitals and healthcare facilities in Sokoto State. The scope will be limited to assessing their knowledge and acceptance of telehealth for remote patient monitoring. Limitations include potential biases due to self-reporting, limited access to healthcare facilities, and technological constraints in rural areas.
