Background of the Study
Nurses are essential healthcare providers who often work under stressful conditions, leading to physical exhaustion, mental health challenges, and job dissatisfaction (Adekunle & Olatunde, 2023). The demanding nature of nursing, characterized by long working hours, high patient loads, and emotional strain, contributes to burnout, reduced productivity, and poor health outcomes among nurses (Okafor & Yakubu, 2024).
Workplace health promotion programs (WHPPs) have been introduced globally as a strategy to improve employee well-being by providing access to wellness activities, stress management training, and physical health initiatives (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). In healthcare institutions, these programs have been shown to enhance job satisfaction, reduce burnout, and improve overall mental and physical health among nurses (Olawale & Usman, 2023). However, in Nigeria, particularly in Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Minna, the extent of implementation and effectiveness of WHPPs in improving nurses' well-being remains unclear.
This study aims to assess the impact of workplace health promotion programs on the well-being of nurses at FMC Minna. It will evaluate the effectiveness of these programs in reducing stress, improving physical health, and enhancing job satisfaction among nurses.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses in Nigeria face significant occupational health challenges, including high stress levels, workplace injuries, and mental health issues (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2023). Despite the recognized benefits of WHPPs, many healthcare facilities in the country do not adequately invest in structured wellness programs for nurses. At FMC Minna, reports of burnout, job dissatisfaction, and high nurse turnover rates indicate a potential gap in workplace health interventions (Ibrahim & Okonkwo, 2024).
Limited research has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of WHPPs in Nigerian healthcare settings. Without empirical data, policymakers may struggle to design effective interventions to enhance nurses’ well-being. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating how workplace health promotion programs impact nurses’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the availability and effectiveness of workplace health promotion programs for nurses at FMC Minna.
To assess the impact of WHPPs on nurses' stress levels, mental health, and overall well-being.
