Background of the Study

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that affects millions of people worldwide, requiring strict dietary and fluid management to prevent complications such as hypertension, fluid overload, and cardiovascular disease (Abubakar & Musa, 2023). One of the major challenges in CKD management is ensuring patients adhere to fluid restrictions to prevent complications associated with excess fluid accumulation, including pulmonary edema and heart failure (Oladipo & Sani, 2024). Despite the importance of fluid restriction, adherence rates among CKD patients remain suboptimal, often leading to poor health outcomes and increased hospitalizations.

Patient education has been identified as a crucial factor in improving adherence to fluid restrictions. Providing CKD patients with adequate knowledge about the risks of fluid overload and the benefits of strict fluid control can enhance their self-management abilities and improve treatment outcomes (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2023). However, in Sokoto State, limited access to structured patient education programs, low health literacy levels, and cultural dietary practices may hinder effective adherence to fluid restrictions (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024).

Understanding the role of patient education in promoting adherence to fluid restrictions is critical for improving CKD management in Sokoto State. This study seeks to assess the impact of educational interventions on patient compliance with fluid restrictions and explore strategies to enhance self-care behaviors among CKD patients in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Non-adherence to fluid restrictions remains a major challenge in CKD management, often leading to poor treatment outcomes, increased disease progression, and frequent hospital admissions. In Sokoto State, where access to healthcare resources is limited, many CKD patients struggle to follow fluid restriction guidelines due to inadequate knowledge, cultural influences, and financial constraints (Oluwaseun & Danjuma, 2023). While patient education has been proposed as a solution, there is a lack of empirical research on its effectiveness in improving adherence among CKD patients in the region.

This study aims to assess the impact of patient education on fluid restriction adherence and identify potential barriers that hinder compliance. By evaluating educational interventions, this research will provide insights into how structured patient education programs can improve CKD outcomes in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of adherence to fluid restrictions among CKD patients in Sokoto State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of patient education on improving adherence to fluid restrictions in CKD management.

  3. To identify barriers to fluid restriction adherence among CKD patients and recommend strategies for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adherence to fluid restrictions among CKD patients in Sokoto State?

  2. How does patient education influence adherence to fluid restrictions in CKD management?

  3. What are the barriers to fluid restriction adherence among CKD patients in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Patient education significantly improves adherence to fluid restrictions in CKD management.

  2. Low health literacy levels negatively impact adherence to fluid restrictions among CKD patients.

  3. Implementing structured patient education programs enhances self-care behaviors and adherence to fluid restrictions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on CKD patients receiving treatment in Sokoto State hospitals, assessing their adherence to fluid restrictions and the impact of patient education. Limitations may include variations in patient educational backgrounds and potential reluctance to disclose non-adherence behaviors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A long-term condition characterized by the gradual loss of kidney function.

  • Fluid Restrictions: A medical recommendation that limits the amount of liquid a CKD patient can consume daily.

  • Patient Education: The process of providing patients with information and skills to manage their health conditions effectively.
