Background of the Study
Nurses play a pivotal role in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers, offering both physical and psychological support during recovery. In the Nigerian Army, nurses are often responsible for providing post-operative care, managing pain, administering medications, and assisting with physical therapy for injured soldiers. In Kano State, where several military hospitals provide care for soldiers wounded in combat, nurses are integral to the rehabilitation process. However, the extent to which nurses are trained or prepared for this role remains unclear, as military healthcare settings often prioritize emergency medical care over long-term rehabilitation efforts (Ibrahim & Tunde, 2023).

The rehabilitation process for wounded soldiers is multifaceted and requires coordination between medical, physical therapy, and psychological care. Nurses in military hospitals are often tasked with facilitating rehabilitation efforts by monitoring patients, encouraging physical activity, and ensuring emotional support for soldiers. However, the challenges posed by limited resources, psychological trauma, and the high volume of patients may hinder nurses’ ability to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services (Bello & Mohammed, 2024). In light of these challenges, an evaluation of nurses’ roles in the rehabilitation process in Kano State military hospitals is necessary to identify areas where further training and support are needed.

Statement of the Problem
While nurses in military hospitals play an essential role in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers, there is insufficient research into how they manage the rehabilitation process in Nigerian military hospitals. The challenges faced by nurses, including a lack of training in specialized rehabilitation techniques, limited resources, and a high patient load, may undermine the quality of care provided. Furthermore, the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers involves both physical and psychological aspects, and nurses may not always have the requisite skills to address these needs effectively. This study seeks to evaluate the role of nurses in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals and to assess how their contributions can be improved to enhance recovery outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of nurses in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals.

  2. To identify the challenges nurses face in providing rehabilitation services to wounded soldiers.

  3. To assess the effectiveness of current training programs for nurses in managing rehabilitation for wounded soldiers.

Research Questions

  1. What role do nurses play in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals?

  2. What challenges do nurses face in providing rehabilitation services to wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals?

  3. How effective are the current training programs for nurses in managing the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers in Kano State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses play a significant role in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals.

  2. Nurses face significant challenges in providing rehabilitation services to wounded soldiers in Kano State military hospitals.

  3. The effectiveness of current training programs for nurses in rehabilitation services is insufficient to meet the needs of wounded soldiers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on military nurses working in hospitals in Kano State and their involvement in the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. The research will evaluate their roles, challenges, and training effectiveness. Limitations include a potential lack of cooperation from military personnel due to the sensitive nature of healthcare operations. Additionally, there may be barriers to accessing all relevant data, given the operational constraints of military hospitals.
