Background of the Study: Immunization remains one of the most effective public health interventions to prevent diseases in children. In Bauchi State, despite significant efforts to increase vaccination coverage, childhood immunization rates remain suboptimal due to a variety of factors such as lack of awareness, cultural barriers, and logistical challenges (Bello et al., 2024). Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, are uniquely positioned to lead vaccination awareness programs and play a pivotal role in educating communities about the importance of immunization.

Nurse-led vaccination awareness programs have been shown to improve vaccination rates by addressing misconceptions, providing accurate information, and offering support to caregivers (Adamu & Ibrahim, 2023). These programs often focus on educating parents and caregivers about the benefits of immunization, the dangers of vaccine-preventable diseases, and the importance of timely vaccinations. By increasing awareness and encouraging active participation, nurses can help bridge the gap in immunization coverage. This study seeks to assess the impact of nurse-led vaccination awareness programs on childhood immunization rates in Bauchi State.

Statement of the Problem: Despite efforts by the government and healthcare providers, immunization rates among children in Bauchi State remain lower than recommended targets. One potential cause of this low coverage is inadequate public awareness regarding the importance of vaccination. Nurse-led vaccination awareness programs have the potential to improve these rates, but their impact on immunization outcomes in Bauchi State has not been fully evaluated. This study aims to explore how nurse-led programs affect vaccination rates among children in the state.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led vaccination awareness programs on childhood immunization rates in Bauchi State.
  2. To assess the knowledge and attitudes of caregivers towards vaccination before and after participation in nurse-led programs.
  3. To identify factors that contribute to the success or failure of nurse-led vaccination awareness programs in Bauchi State.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the effect of nurse-led vaccination awareness programs on immunization rates among children in Bauchi State?
  2. How do caregiver knowledge and attitudes toward vaccination change after participating in nurse-led vaccination programs in Bauchi State?
  3. What factors influence the effectiveness of nurse-led vaccination awareness programs in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led vaccination awareness programs significantly increase immunization rates among children in Bauchi State.
  2. Caregivers who participate in nurse-led vaccination programs show increased knowledge and positive attitudes towards immunization.
  3. The success of nurse-led vaccination programs is influenced by factors such as community support, healthcare infrastructure, and cultural beliefs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on nurse-led vaccination awareness programs implemented in communities within Bauchi State. Limitations include the possibility of reporting bias from caregivers and variability in program implementation across different regions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Nurse-Led Vaccination Awareness Programs: Educational initiatives led by nurses to inform communities about the benefits of vaccination and promote immunization.
  • Immunization Rates: The percentage of children in a given population who have received recommended vaccinations.
  • Caregiver Knowledge and Attitudes: The understanding and beliefs of caregivers regarding vaccination and its importance for child health.
