Background of the Study: With the rapid growth of digital health systems worldwide, the need for protecting sensitive patient data has never been more critical. In Nigeria, the adoption of digital health systems, including Electronic Health Records (EHRs), telemedicine platforms, and mobile health applications, has transformed healthcare delivery, particularly in improving access and quality of care (Oluwaseun et al., 2023). However, this digital transformation also raises significant concerns regarding the security and confidentiality of patient data, particularly in the context of nursing practice, where sensitive patient information is frequently handled.

In Sokoto State, healthcare facilities are increasingly integrating digital health systems to manage patient information, enhance communication, and streamline service delivery. Nurses, who often serve as the frontline healthcare providers, play a pivotal role in ensuring the confidentiality and security of patient data. However, studies suggest that many nurses in Nigeria lack sufficient knowledge and training regarding the principles of data security and privacy (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). This gap in knowledge may lead to unintentional breaches of patient confidentiality, compromising trust in the healthcare system and risking legal and ethical violations. Therefore, understanding the role of nurses in ensuring data security and patient confidentiality in Sokoto State is crucial for safeguarding patient rights and improving healthcare quality.

Statement of the Problem: The increased use of digital health systems in Sokoto State raises concerns about data security and patient confidentiality. Nurses, as key users of these systems, have a significant role to play in ensuring that sensitive patient data is protected. However, there is limited understanding of how well nurses are equipped to handle the security and confidentiality of patient data. This study aims to investigate the practices, knowledge, and challenges nurses face in ensuring data security and confidentiality within digital health systems in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the knowledge and practices of nurses regarding data security and patient confidentiality in digital health systems in Sokoto State.
  2. To evaluate the challenges faced by nurses in ensuring the security and confidentiality of patient data in Sokoto State healthcare facilities.
  3. To identify strategies to improve nurses' role in safeguarding data security and patient confidentiality in Sokoto State.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses regarding data security and patient confidentiality in digital health systems in Sokoto State?
  2. What practices do nurses follow to ensure patient data security and confidentiality in Sokoto State healthcare facilities?
  3. What are the challenges nurses face in maintaining data security and patient confidentiality in digital health systems in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses with higher levels of training in digital health systems exhibit better knowledge and practices in ensuring patient data security and confidentiality.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the infrastructure provided by healthcare facilities and the effectiveness of nurses in safeguarding patient data.
  3. Nurses face significant challenges in ensuring data security and patient confidentiality due to inadequate training and support.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: The study will focus on nurses working in healthcare facilities in Sokoto State that utilize digital health systems. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and limited access to certain digital health platforms for observation.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Digital Health Systems: Technologies used in healthcare settings to manage patient information, including Electronic Health Records (EHRs), telemedicine, and mobile health applications.
  • Data Security: The protection of patient data from unauthorized access, alteration, or destruction.
  • Patient Confidentiality: The ethical and legal duty to protect patients’ personal health information from unauthorized disclosure.
