Background of the Study: Emergencies and disasters, ranging from natural disasters like floods and earthquakes to man-made crises such as chemical spills or accidents, often place healthcare systems under significant stress. In such situations, the role of nurses becomes crucial in ensuring timely and effective medical responses, as they are often the first point of contact for affected individuals (Abdullahi et al., 2023). Nurses' involvement in emergency preparedness and disaster response includes providing immediate medical care, managing resources, coordinating with other healthcare professionals, and educating communities on preparedness strategies.
In Bauchi State, the frequent occurrence of both natural and public health emergencies, such as outbreaks of infectious diseases, calls for effective disaster preparedness strategies. Despite the importance of the nursing workforce in disaster response, studies on their roles in Bauchi State hospitals remain limited. This research seeks to assess how nurses contribute to emergency preparedness and their effectiveness during disaster response, with a focus on understanding their training, preparedness, and capacity to handle such crises.
Statement of the Problem: The capacity of Bauchi State hospitals to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters is challenged by inadequate resources, limited preparedness, and sometimes insufficient knowledge of protocols. Nurses, as essential members of the healthcare system, play a pivotal role in both preparedness and response. However, the extent of their involvement in emergency and disaster situations, as well as the impact of their role, is underexplored. This study seeks to investigate how nurses contribute to emergency preparedness and disaster response in Bauchi State hospitals and to identify ways to strengthen their involvement in these critical functions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on nurses employed in Bauchi State hospitals and their role in disaster preparedness and response. A limitation is the variability in hospital resources and preparedness levels, which may affect the generalizability of the findings.
