Background of the Study: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that requires continuous management, including strict adherence to dietary recommendations aimed at controlling blood glucose levels. A well-balanced diet can significantly reduce complications associated with diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, and neuropathy (Ogunfowokan et al., 2024). However, despite the importance of dietary management, many diabetic patients struggle to adhere to prescribed dietary recommendations. Adherence to these dietary guidelines is influenced by various factors, including knowledge, socioeconomic status, access to food, cultural beliefs, and psychological factors (Ali et al., 2023).
In Katsina State, a region with limited access to healthcare and nutrition education resources, adherence to dietary recommendations among diabetic patients remains a major concern. Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, provides a vital role in the management of diabetes in the region, yet barriers to adherence persist. Identifying these barriers is crucial in developing strategies to improve patient outcomes and reduce diabetes-related complications. This study will explore the barriers to adherence to dietary recommendations among diabetic patients at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, and evaluate how these barriers can be mitigated to improve patient care.
Statement of the Problem: Despite receiving medical advice and dietary guidelines, diabetic patients at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, often fail to consistently follow dietary recommendations. This non-adherence has contributed to poor diabetes management and an increase in complications. While several studies have explored factors affecting dietary adherence in diabetic patients, specific barriers in this region have not been thoroughly investigated. This study seeks to identify the barriers to adherence and propose practical solutions to enhance compliance with dietary guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on diabetic patients at Federal Medical Centre, Katsina. Limitations include the potential for recall bias from patients regarding their adherence to dietary recommendations, as well as challenges in accessing rural populations for a more diverse sample.
