Background of the Study: Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that affects millions of people globally, with significant implications for both the individuals diagnosed and their families. The caregiving role for patients with dementia often falls on family members, many of whom are unprepared for the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges that come with providing care for a loved one with such a complex and chronic condition (Alhassan et al., 2024). In regions like Zamfara State, where healthcare resources may be limited, home caregivers, often family members, bear a considerable burden in managing the day-to-day care of dementia patients, including medication administration, personal hygiene, and providing emotional support.

Nurses play a pivotal role in supporting home caregivers of dementia patients by offering education, guidance, and practical assistance to help manage the complexities of dementia care. Effective nurse-led support for caregivers can improve the quality of care provided, reduce caregiver stress, and enhance the overall well-being of both patients and caregivers (Sulaimon & Ige, 2025). However, the specific role of nurses in supporting dementia caregivers in Zamfara State, where healthcare infrastructure may be underdeveloped, has not been extensively studied. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in supporting home caregivers of dementia patients in Zamfara State, focusing on their educational and emotional support functions.

Statement of the Problem: The caregiving burden for individuals caring for dementia patients in Zamfara State is often overwhelming, with limited support from healthcare professionals. Home caregivers frequently lack the knowledge and skills necessary to provide optimal care for dementia patients, leading to increased stress and lower quality of care. Nurses have the potential to alleviate some of these challenges by providing essential support, but the extent to which nurses are involved in assisting home caregivers in this region remains underexplored. This study aims to identify how nurses support caregivers and explore the challenges and strategies to enhance this support in Zamfara State.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of nurses in supporting home caregivers of dementia patients in Zamfara State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led support on caregiver stress and the quality of care provided to dementia patients.
  3. To identify barriers to effective nurse support for dementia caregivers and propose solutions to address these barriers.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the role of nurses in supporting home caregivers of dementia patients in Zamfara State?
  2. How does nurse-led support impact caregiver stress and the quality of care provided to dementia patients?
  3. What barriers exist in the provision of nurse support to dementia caregivers in Zamfara State, and how can these barriers be addressed?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses’ involvement in providing education and emotional support significantly reduces caregiver stress in Zamfara State.
  2. Nurse-led support improves the quality of care provided to dementia patients by home caregivers in Zamfara State.
  3. Lack of resources and training for nurses limits their ability to effectively support home caregivers of dementia patients in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on investigating the role of nurses in supporting home caregivers of dementia patients in Zamfara State. Limitations include the possibility of recall bias from caregivers, difficulty accessing remote rural areas, and variability in the quality of care based on individual nurses’ training and expertise.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Home caregivers: Family members or other individuals providing care to dementia patients at home, including assistance with daily activities, medication, and emotional support.
  • Dementia: A broad category of brain diseases that cause long-term and often gradual cognitive decline, affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities.
  • Nurse-led support: Guidance, education, and emotional assistance provided by nurses to improve the well-being of patients or caregivers, often focused on disease management and care practices.
