Background of the Study: The role of forensic nursing has become increasingly recognized as essential in the intersection of healthcare and legal systems. Nurses are often the first professionals to come into contact with victims of violence, abuse, or other crimes, making them integral in the initial steps of forensic investigations. In Kaduna State, where instances of violence, abuse, and other criminal activities are common, nurses must collaborate effectively with law enforcement agencies to ensure that evidence is collected, documented, and preserved properly, while also providing care for victims (Wright et al., 2023). Despite this critical role, there is limited research on the collaborative efforts between nurses and law enforcement agencies in Kaduna State, as well as the barriers and challenges they face in this collaborative process.

Nurses involved in forensic investigations are tasked with maintaining the chain of evidence, ensuring accurate documentation, and providing medical reports that can be used in legal proceedings (Lowe et al., 2024). These responsibilities require specialized training, communication skills, and a clear understanding of the legal framework surrounding forensic investigations. Nurses also play a role in educating law enforcement about the medical aspects of forensic evidence and ensuring that the rights and well-being of victims are prioritized. However, the effectiveness of these collaborations often depends on institutional support, training, and available resources.

This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in collaborating with law enforcement agencies for forensic investigations in Kaduna State, with a focus on the skills, knowledge, and challenges involved in this partnership.

Statement of the Problem: In Kaduna State, nurses frequently come into contact with victims of crime, such as sexual assault, domestic violence, and physical abuse. However, their role in collaborating with law enforcement agencies for forensic investigations is not well understood. The lack of research on this topic may result in missed opportunities for improving the quality of forensic investigations, reducing the risk of evidence contamination, and enhancing victim support. This study will explore the extent to which nurses in Kaduna State collaborate with law enforcement in forensic investigations and identify the challenges that hinder effective cooperation.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the role of nurses in collaborating with law enforcement agencies for forensic investigations in Kaduna State.
  2. To assess the challenges faced by nurses in the process of collaborating with law enforcement agencies in forensic cases.
  3. To identify strategies for improving collaboration between nurses and law enforcement agencies in forensic investigations in Kaduna State.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the role of nurses in collaborating with law enforcement agencies for forensic investigations in Kaduna State?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in collaborating with law enforcement agencies for forensic investigations in Kaduna State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve collaboration between nurses and law enforcement agencies in forensic investigations in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses who receive specialized forensic training are more effective in collaborating with law enforcement agencies during forensic investigations in Kaduna State.
  2. The lack of institutional support and resources negatively affects the collaboration between nurses and law enforcement agencies in forensic investigations.
  3. Nurses’ collaboration with law enforcement agencies improves the accuracy of forensic investigations and victim support.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on nurses in Kaduna State who are involved in forensic investigations, particularly in cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, and abuse. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and difficulty accessing sensitive forensic case data due to confidentiality.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Forensic nursing: A nursing specialty that involves the care of victims of violence, abuse, and other crimes, with a focus on evidence collection and documentation for legal proceedings.
  • Collaboration with law enforcement: The process by which healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, work together with law enforcement agencies to ensure the proper handling of evidence and the well-being of victims.
  • Forensic investigations: Investigations aimed at collecting and analyzing evidence for legal purposes, often involving criminal cases.
