Background of the Study: Trauma care is a critical area of emergency nursing, particularly for patients with gunshot and stab wounds, who require immediate and often specialized intervention. In conflict-affected regions like Yobe State, Nigeria, the incidence of violence-related trauma, including gunshot and stab wounds, has significantly increased (Olorunfemi et al., 2024). Nurses play a central role in trauma care by stabilizing patients, managing pain, preventing infection, and providing emotional support. The effectiveness of trauma care is dependent not only on the nurses’ clinical skills but also on the availability of resources, timely interventions, and coordination with other healthcare professionals.

In Yobe State, healthcare facilities are often overwhelmed by the volume of patients, and nurses must manage a variety of trauma cases, often under challenging circumstances. This study investigates the role of nurses in improving the quality of trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims, focusing on the practices, challenges, and strategies that can enhance outcomes for these patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities.

Statement of the Problem: Despite the increasing number of trauma cases due to violence in Yobe State, there is limited research on the role of nurses in managing gunshot and stab wound victims in healthcare facilities. Nurses are critical in trauma care, but their roles, challenges, and the effectiveness of their interventions in this area have not been thoroughly examined. This study seeks to investigate the contributions of nurses to trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims and to identify factors that hinder the provision of effective care.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the role of nurses in improving trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
  2. To assess the challenges faced by nurses in providing trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims.
  3. To identify strategies that can enhance the quality of trauma care provided by nurses to gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State.

Research Questions:

  1. What role do nurses play in improving trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State healthcare facilities?
  2. What challenges do nurses face in providing trauma care to gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State?
  3. What strategies can enhance the quality of trauma care provided by nurses to gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses who receive specialized trauma care training provide better care for gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
  2. Nurses face significant challenges in providing effective trauma care due to insufficient resources and high patient volumes.
  3. Improved nurse training and resource allocation will enhance the quality of trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on the role of nurses in managing gunshot and stab wound victims in Yobe State healthcare facilities. Limitations may include difficulty accessing sensitive data due to security concerns and variations in trauma care practices across healthcare facilities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Gunshot wound: An injury caused by a projectile from a firearm.
  • Stab wound: An injury caused by a sharp object, such as a knife, penetrating the body.
  • Trauma care: Medical treatment provided to individuals who have suffered injuries, particularly from violence or accidents.
