Background of the Study: Trauma care is a critical area of emergency nursing, particularly for patients with gunshot and stab wounds, who require immediate and often specialized intervention. In conflict-affected regions like Yobe State, Nigeria, the incidence of violence-related trauma, including gunshot and stab wounds, has significantly increased (Olorunfemi et al., 2024). Nurses play a central role in trauma care by stabilizing patients, managing pain, preventing infection, and providing emotional support. The effectiveness of trauma care is dependent not only on the nurses’ clinical skills but also on the availability of resources, timely interventions, and coordination with other healthcare professionals.
In Yobe State, healthcare facilities are often overwhelmed by the volume of patients, and nurses must manage a variety of trauma cases, often under challenging circumstances. This study investigates the role of nurses in improving the quality of trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims, focusing on the practices, challenges, and strategies that can enhance outcomes for these patients in Yobe State healthcare facilities.
Statement of the Problem: Despite the increasing number of trauma cases due to violence in Yobe State, there is limited research on the role of nurses in managing gunshot and stab wound victims in healthcare facilities. Nurses are critical in trauma care, but their roles, challenges, and the effectiveness of their interventions in this area have not been thoroughly examined. This study seeks to investigate the contributions of nurses to trauma care for gunshot and stab wound victims and to identify factors that hinder the provision of effective care.
