Background of the Study: Malaria remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children under five years old in Nigeria, including in Borno State (Ajibola et al., 2023). The burden of malaria is exacerbated by inadequate access to healthcare, limited awareness, and a lack of effective prevention and treatment strategies in many rural areas. Nurses play a crucial role in malaria prevention and treatment, particularly in regions like Borno State, which faces insecurity and poor healthcare infrastructure (Sulaimon et al., 2024). Nurses contribute by educating communities about preventive measures, administering antimalarial treatments, and monitoring patients for complications, especially in children who are highly vulnerable to severe malaria (Olatunji & Akintoye, 2023).
Despite their significant role, the extent of nurses' involvement and the challenges they face in malaria management, particularly among children, remain under-researched in Borno State. This study will assess the role of nurses in the prevention and treatment of malaria among children and explore the challenges and opportunities for improving malaria care in the state.
Statement of the Problem: Malaria remains a major health issue for children in Borno State, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, play a significant role in both malaria prevention and treatment, but their contributions are often limited by inadequate resources, lack of training, and insecurity. Understanding the role of nurses in malaria management and identifying the barriers they face will help improve malaria care in children and enhance overall public health outcomes in Borno State.
Objectives of the Study:
- To assess the role of nurses in malaria prevention and treatment among children in Borno State.
- To evaluate the challenges faced by nurses in providing effective malaria care to children.
- To recommend strategies to enhance the role of nurses in managing malaria among children in Borno State.
Research Questions:
- What is the role of nurses in malaria prevention and treatment among children in Borno State?
- What challenges do nurses face in managing malaria in children in Borno State?
- How can the role of nurses in malaria prevention and treatment be enhanced in Borno State?
Research Hypotheses:
- Nurses play a significant role in both preventing and treating malaria in children in Borno State, despite the challenges they face.
- Inadequate training and insecurity are major barriers that limit the effectiveness of nurses in managing malaria in children.
- Strengthening nurses' training and resources will improve malaria care and reduce child mortality in Borno State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on the role of nurses in malaria prevention and treatment among children in Borno State. It will explore both community and hospital-based healthcare settings. Limitations include potential difficulty in accessing healthcare facilities in conflict-affected areas and obtaining comprehensive data from frontline healthcare workers.

- Malaria prevention: Measures taken to prevent malaria infection, such as the use of insecticide-treated nets, indoor spraying, and environmental management.
- Malaria treatment: Medical interventions aimed at treating malaria, including the administration of antimalarial drugs.
