Background of the Study: Access to primary healthcare services is fundamental to improving the health and well-being of communities, particularly in rural areas. In Sokoto State, like in many other parts of Nigeria, rural communities face significant barriers to accessing essential healthcare services, including long distances to healthcare facilities, financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of awareness about available services (Oluwaseun et al., 2023). Despite the government's efforts to improve healthcare accessibility, these barriers continue to hinder effective healthcare delivery and the achievement of health equity (Nwobodo et al., 2024).
Primary healthcare services are crucial in addressing preventable diseases, maternal health, and child nutrition, which are prevalent in rural areas. Nurses, as frontline health workers, are vital in promoting health education, conducting outreach, and providing care in underserved areas. Understanding the barriers that rural populations face in accessing these services is key to designing interventions that can improve health outcomes (Olawale & Dada, 2023).
This study aims to evaluate the various barriers that hinder rural communities in Sokoto State from seeking primary healthcare services and provide recommendations to improve healthcare access in these areas.
Statement of the Problem: Despite ongoing government and health sector efforts, rural communities in Sokoto State continue to encounter significant barriers to seeking primary healthcare services, which results in poor health outcomes. These barriers include inadequate infrastructure, cultural beliefs, financial constraints, and lack of awareness, contributing to low healthcare utilization rates. This study seeks to identify and evaluate these barriers, with a focus on their impact on health-seeking behavior and the utilization of primary healthcare services in Sokoto State.
