Background of the Study: Fungal skin infections (FSIs) are common dermatological conditions that affect individuals of all ages and can significantly impact their quality of life (Shittu & Umar, 2023). These infections, caused by various fungi such as dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds, manifest as conditions like athlete’s foot, ringworm, and candidiasis (Bello et al., 2024). While FSIs are generally treatable, they can become chronic or recurrent, particularly if not addressed properly through hygiene, medication, and lifestyle changes (Ali et al., 2023). Nurses, as primary caregivers, play a critical role in educating patients about prevention strategies, recognizing early signs of infection, and providing appropriate treatment or referrals to dermatologists (Zubairu & Musa, 2023).

In Kaduna State, there is a lack of comprehensive educational programs for both healthcare providers and the general population on fungal skin infections, leading to underdiagnosis and mismanagement of these conditions (Umar et al., 2023). This research aims to assess the impact of nurse-led education on the prevention and management of fungal skin infections in hospitals in Kaduna State, focusing on whether educational interventions lead to improved patient outcomes and reduced incidence of FSIs.

Statement of the Problem: Fungal skin infections are prevalent in Kaduna State, but many patients suffer from untreated or poorly managed infections due to a lack of awareness and proper guidance on prevention and treatment. Nurse-led educational initiatives have the potential to significantly improve the management of these infections, but there is limited research on the effectiveness of such interventions. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of nurse-led education on preventing and managing fungal skin infections in Kaduna State hospitals.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the effectiveness of nurse-led education in improving patient knowledge about fungal skin infections.
  2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led education on the prevention and management of fungal skin infections in Kaduna State hospitals.
  3. To identify barriers to the successful implementation of nurse-led educational interventions for fungal skin infections.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective is nurse-led education in improving patients' knowledge about fungal skin infections in Kaduna State hospitals?
  2. What impact does nurse-led education have on the prevention and management of fungal skin infections in these hospitals?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing educational interventions on fungal skin infections?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led education significantly improves patients’ knowledge about fungal skin infections and their prevention.
  2. Nurse-led education leads to a significant reduction in the incidence and recurrence of fungal skin infections in hospital settings.
  3. Barriers such as lack of resources and training hinder the successful implementation of nurse-led education programs on fungal skin infections.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will be conducted in selected hospitals in Kaduna State, focusing on the impact of nurse-led education on fungal skin infections. Data will be collected from patients and nurses through surveys and interviews. Limitations may include variation in healthcare settings and potential biases in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Fungal Skin Infections (FSIs): Infections caused by fungi affecting the skin, commonly presenting as conditions like athlete’s foot or ringworm.
  • Nurse-led education: Educational interventions conducted by nurses aimed at improving patients' understanding and self-management of health conditions.
  • Prevention and management of fungal infections: The strategies and practices employed to avoid and treat fungal infections, including hygiene, medication, and lifestyle changes.
