Background of the Study: Kidney stones, also known as renal calculi, are a common urological condition characterized by the formation of crystalline deposits in the kidneys (Alfauzan et al., 2023). These stones can lead to severe pain, urinary obstruction, and infections, posing significant challenges to patient well-being and hospital resources (Haruna et al., 2024). Management of kidney stones requires not only surgical intervention in severe cases but also effective conservative management, including pain relief, hydration, and dietary modifications. Nurses play a critical role in the management of patients with kidney stones, particularly in providing education, monitoring symptoms, and assisting with post-treatment care (Mahran et al., 2023). However, the quality of care provided can be heavily influenced by nurses' knowledge of the condition, available resources, and their practice patterns.
In Sokoto State, healthcare facilities have faced challenges such as limited access to diagnostic tools and treatments for kidney stones (Siddiqi et al., 2024). Despite this, nurses' expertise in managing the condition could play a pivotal role in improving outcomes and reducing complications. Previous studies have shown that nurses’ knowledge gaps regarding the pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of kidney stones may lead to suboptimal care, influencing the overall success of treatment protocols (Abubakar & Alhaji, 2024). This research seeks to evaluate the level of knowledge and practice among nurses in Sokoto State hospitals in managing patients with kidney stones to determine areas for improvement and provide recommendations for better training and care delivery.
Statement of the Problem: Despite the importance of effective management of kidney stones, there is a noticeable lack of research into the knowledge and practices of nurses in Sokoto State hospitals regarding the condition. Existing studies have highlighted that inadequate knowledge and inconsistent practices can result in delayed diagnosis, improper treatment, and poor patient outcomes. This research aims to evaluate the level of nurses' knowledge and practice in managing kidney stone patients in Sokoto State, to identify gaps and propose strategies to enhance care provision.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will be conducted in Sokoto State hospitals, focusing on nurses involved in the care of kidney stone patients. The study will examine both knowledge and practical approaches to patient care. A limitation of this study may be the potential reluctance of nurses to participate in interviews or surveys, possibly leading to response bias.
