Background of the Study

Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions as well as the emotions of others. In the modern corporate environment, EI is increasingly regarded as a critical skill for effective decision-making, leadership, and overall organizational success. At MTN Nigeria, a leading telecommunications provider, decision-making processes are crucial for maintaining its competitive advantage in the rapidly evolving Nigerian market. The company operates across various regions, including Kwara State, where it faces unique challenges and opportunities.

In today’s competitive business environment, decision-makers are required to manage complex scenarios, negotiate with diverse stakeholders, and handle high-pressure situations. Employees with high emotional intelligence are better able to navigate these challenges, maintain effective relationships, and make more informed, rational decisions. MTN Nigeria’s success in Kwara State is partly driven by its ability to make strategic decisions that align with both local market dynamics and its broader corporate objectives. Given the company’s reliance on a large and diverse workforce, emotional intelligence plays a significant role in enhancing the quality of decisions made by both employees and managers.

Research on the relationship between EI and decision-making in Nigerian companies, particularly in the telecommunications sector, remains sparse. While global studies have shown that EI can significantly enhance decision-making capabilities by fostering better communication, collaboration, and problem-solving, there is a need to examine these dynamics within the Nigerian context, particularly in regions such as Kwara State. This study aims to explore the impact of emotional intelligence on decision-making at MTN Nigeria in Kwara State, highlighting how EI can enhance organizational effectiveness.

Statement of the Problem

Decision-making is a core function in any organization, and its quality directly influences organizational performance. MTN Nigeria’s operations in Kwara State face challenges related to market volatility, regional competition, and customer satisfaction. The role of emotional intelligence in improving decision-making processes remains underexplored in the context of MTN Nigeria. While EI is often discussed in terms of leadership, there is a lack of empirical evidence on how it influences decision-making at various levels of the organization, particularly in regions like Kwara. This study seeks to examine the extent to which EI impacts decision-making at MTN Nigeria in Kwara State, considering the organizational and regional factors that may affect its influence.
