Background of the Study

Business continuity planning (BCP) is essential for organizations, especially IT-driven firms, to ensure operational resilience in the face of disruptions. Telecommunications firms, as critical infrastructure providers, rely heavily on IT systems to maintain uninterrupted service delivery. A robust BCP enables these firms to mitigate risks, recover quickly from outages, and maintain customer trust (Garba & Musa, 2024).

In Katsina State, the growing reliance on IT-driven processes among telecom firms underscores the importance of effective business continuity strategies. Frequent challenges, including power outages, cyberattacks, and inadequate disaster recovery mechanisms, threaten business operations (Ahmed et al., 2023). This study reviews the current state of BCP among telecommunications firms in Katsina State, examining its effectiveness in mitigating risks and ensuring continuity.

Statement of the Problem

Telecommunications firms in Katsina State face increasing risks from technological failures, natural disasters, and cyber threats. Despite the critical role of business continuity planning, many firms lack comprehensive plans or fail to integrate IT-specific contingencies, leaving them vulnerable to prolonged disruptions (Bello & Ibrahim, 2023). Additionally, resource constraints and limited expertise further hinder effective BCP implementation.

This study investigates the challenges and effectiveness of BCP among telecommunications firms in Katsina State, offering insights into areas of improvement.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the state of business continuity planning in IT-driven telecommunications firms in Katsina State.

2. To identify challenges in implementing effective BCP in telecommunications firms.

3. To recommend strategies for improving BCP to ensure operational resilience.

Research Questions

1. What is the current state of business continuity planning in telecommunications firms in Katsina State?

2. What challenges do telecommunications firms face in implementing effective BCP?

3. What strategies can improve BCP in IT-driven telecommunications firms?

Research Hypotheses

1. Business continuity planning in telecommunications firms is not adequately developed to handle major disruptions.

2. Challenges such as resource constraints and lack of expertise significantly hinder the implementation of effective BCP.

3. Improved BCP strategies significantly enhance operational resilience in telecommunications firms.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on telecommunications firms in Katsina State, examining their BCP practices and challenges. Limitations include variations in firm sizes and limited access to proprietary BCP documentation.
