Background of the Study

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital to economic growth and development, often serving as the backbone of emerging economies like Nigeria. For SMEs in Katsina State, IT integration is a critical component of business expansion, enabling improved efficiency, market reach, and competitiveness (Usman & Ibrahim, 2023). IT systems, including enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, e-commerce platforms, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools, provide SMEs with the tools needed to scale their operations.

However, IT integration is not without its challenges. Factors such as high implementation costs, lack of technical expertise, and resistance to change among employees often impede successful integration (Bashir & Abubakar, 2024). Additionally, the rapid evolution of technology means SMEs must constantly adapt to stay relevant, further complicating the integration process.

Despite these challenges, IT integration offers significant opportunities for SMEs to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer engagement, and drive growth. This study explores the challenges faced by SMEs in Katsina State when integrating IT systems during business expansion.

Statement of the Problem

While IT integration is critical for the growth and competitiveness of SMEs, many firms in Katsina State struggle with its implementation. High costs, limited access to skilled personnel, and inadequate infrastructure are among the primary barriers (Ahmed et al., 2023). Resistance to change and insufficient training further exacerbate these challenges, resulting in suboptimal use of IT systems.

The lack of localized studies on IT integration challenges specific to SMEs in Katsina State limits the ability of business owners and policymakers to address these issues effectively. This study seeks to provide insights into the barriers to IT integration and recommend strategies for overcoming them.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the challenges of IT integration faced by SMEs in Katsina State.

2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on business expansion efforts.

3. To propose strategies for overcoming IT integration challenges in SMEs.

Research Questions

1. What challenges do SMEs in Katsina State face in integrating IT systems?

2. How do these challenges affect business expansion efforts?

3. What strategies can be employed to overcome IT integration challenges in SMEs?

Research Hypotheses

1. IT integration challenges do not significantly affect business expansion in SMEs in Katsina State.

2. The impact of IT integration challenges varies significantly among SMEs.

3. Proposed strategies significantly improve IT integration in SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on SMEs in Katsina State and their challenges in integrating IT systems during business expansion. Limitations may include variability in IT adoption levels and reluctance of business owners to disclose internal processes.

Definitions of Terms
