Background of the Study

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a key driver of educational development worldwide, transforming the way knowledge is delivered and received. In tertiary institutions, ICT tools such as learning management systems, digital libraries, and online platforms enable students to access learning materials, collaborate with peers and instructors, and enhance their academic performance. The rapid adoption of ICT in universities has led to more interactive, flexible, and accessible learning environments, contributing to improved student outcomes and engagement (Ogunleye & Adeyemi, 2023). However, while many universities in Nigeria, including those in Benue State, have embraced ICT, the extent to which it has impacted academic performance remains uncertain.

In Benue State, universities face several challenges related to academic performance, including overcrowded lecture halls, inadequate teaching materials, and limited access to modern educational tools. The adoption of ICT has the potential to address some of these issues by providing students and educators with innovative tools for teaching and learning. Despite the growing integration of ICT in the classroom, many students in Benue State universities still experience difficulties in leveraging these technologies effectively. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of ICT adoption on the academic performance of students in Benue State's tertiary institutions, examining the relationship between the use of ICT and student outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

The integration of ICT in universities in Benue State has not been fully realized in terms of its impact on academic performance. While ICT offers great potential to improve teaching and learning, there is insufficient evidence on whether the widespread adoption of these technologies has directly contributed to improved academic performance. Additionally, challenges such as inadequate ICT infrastructure, lack of training, and resistance to technological change hinder the effective use of ICT in educational settings. This study aims to explore the relationship between ICT adoption and academic performance in universities in Benue State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of ICT adoption on academic performance in universities in Benue State.

2. To explore the role of ICT in improving student engagement, learning outcomes, and academic achievement.

3. To identify the challenges faced by universities in Benue State in adopting and effectively utilizing ICT for academic purposes.

Research Questions

1. How has ICT adoption affected academic performance in universities in Benue State?

2. What role does ICT play in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes in universities in Benue State?

3. What challenges do universities in Benue State face in adopting and utilizing ICT for academic purposes?

Research Hypotheses

1. ICT adoption has a significant positive impact on academic performance in universities in Benue State.

2. ICT tools improve student engagement, learning outcomes, and academic achievement in universities in Benue State.

3. Universities in Benue State face significant challenges in adopting and effectively utilizing ICT for academic purposes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on universities in Benue State and examine the impact of ICT adoption on academic performance. The study will be limited to universities that have implemented ICT tools in their teaching and learning processes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data, variations in the quality of ICT tools, and limited access to specific data on academic performance.
