Background of the Study

Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS) are essential tools that help organizations manage and store documents electronically, facilitating improved access, security, and collaboration (Nwachukwu et al., 2023). As businesses increasingly face the challenges of managing large volumes of data and documentation, EDMS offer an efficient solution for reducing paperwork, enhancing workflows, and ensuring regulatory compliance. In Benue State, various firms are adopting these systems, but there is a need to evaluate their impact on operational efficiency, especially in small to medium-sized enterprises.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread adoption of EDMS in many organizations, the degree to which these systems enhance operational efficiency in firms in Benue State remains unclear. Challenges such as the high initial investment, technical difficulties, and resistance to change may hinder the full realization of the benefits of EDMS. This study seeks to assess the role of EDMS in improving operational efficiency in firms across various sectors in Benue State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of EDMS on operational efficiency in firms in Benue State.
  2. To identify challenges and barriers to the adoption of EDMS in these firms.
  3. To propose strategies for improving the implementation and use of EDMS in enhancing operational efficiency.

Research Questions

  1. How does the adoption of EDMS affect operational efficiency in firms in Benue State?
  2. What challenges and barriers hinder the effective implementation of EDMS?
  3. What strategies can improve the adoption and impact of EDMS on operational efficiency?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The adoption of EDMS does not significantly improve operational efficiency in firms in Benue State.
  2. Challenges and barriers do not significantly affect the implementation of EDMS in firms.
  3. Proposed strategies do not significantly enhance the adoption and use of EDMS for operational efficiency.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on firms in Benue State that have adopted EDMS. Limitations include the variability in the adoption levels of EDMS across different sectors and the difficulty in accessing detailed operational data from private firms.

Definitions of Terms

Electronic Document Management System (EDMS): A system designed to manage, store, and track electronic documents and images.
Operational Efficiency: The ability of an organization to deliver products or services in the most cost-effective manner while maintaining high quality.
