Background of the Study
Government grants play a crucial role in supporting small-scale agro-processing enterprises, particularly in emerging economies like Nigeria. These grants provide financial resources to businesses that might otherwise struggle to access capital due to limited access to credit, especially in the agricultural sector (Olaniyi & Bamidele, 2024). Agro-processing businesses, particularly in Kano State, are essential to Nigeria's economic diversification, contributing to food security, job creation, and rural development.
Government initiatives, such as grants aimed at boosting local agro-processing enterprises, are designed to enhance production capacity, improve technology adoption, and promote market access. Despite their potential, the effectiveness of these grants in fostering business growth has been inadequately explored, especially in the context of Kano State, where small-scale agro-processing businesses often face challenges like poor infrastructure and limited access to skilled labor (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
While government grants are intended to boost the growth of small-scale agro-processing enterprises, their impact on business performance remains unclear. In Kano State, despite the availability of grants, many small agro-processing businesses still face challenges in terms of productivity, access to markets, and sustainability. This study aims to explore how government grants affect these enterprises and identify barriers that limit the effectiveness of such support (Shittu & Olowolayemo, 2024).
