Background of the Study
Trade unions play a crucial role in advocating for employees' rights and welfare in various sectors, including the manufacturing industry. They serve as intermediaries between employers and employees, negotiating for better working conditions, fair wages, benefits, and job security. Lafarge Cement, one of the largest cement manufacturers in Nigeria, operates across various states, including Adamawa, where it employs a significant number of workers. The presence of trade unions within Lafarge Cement provides employees with a platform to voice their concerns and ensure that their welfare is prioritized by the organization.

In Adamawa State, where Lafarge Cement’s operations are central to the economy, employees rely on trade unions to address issues related to job security, working hours, health and safety standards, and welfare programs. While the relationship between trade unions and employee welfare has been studied in various contexts, the specific impact of trade unions on employee welfare in Lafarge Cement has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to assess how trade unions have influenced employee welfare in Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State, focusing on benefits such as improved working conditions, compensation packages, and job satisfaction.

Statement of the Problem
The effectiveness of trade unions in improving employee welfare remains a topic of debate, especially in the context of Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State. While trade unions are expected to secure better working conditions and benefits for employees, it is unclear whether the trade unions within Lafarge Cement have successfully achieved these goals. This study seeks to investigate the influence of trade unions on employee welfare in Lafarge Cement, examining the extent to which union activities have contributed to employees’ overall well-being.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of trade unions on employee welfare at Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of trade union activities in improving working conditions and benefits for Lafarge Cement employees.

  3. To identify the key factors influencing employee satisfaction and welfare as a result of trade union involvement.

Research Questions

  1. How have trade unions impacted employee welfare at Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State?

  2. What improvements in working conditions and benefits can be attributed to the activities of trade unions in Lafarge Cement?

  3. How satisfied are Lafarge Cement employees with the role of trade unions in advocating for their welfare?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Trade union involvement has a significant positive impact on employee welfare at Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State.

  2. Employees who are members of trade unions report higher levels of job satisfaction and welfare than those who are not.

  3. Trade unions at Lafarge Cement have successfully influenced improvements in working conditions and employee benefits.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on employees of Lafarge Cement in Adamawa State, specifically examining the impact of trade unions on their welfare. Limitations may include potential biases in employee perceptions of trade unions and the challenge of measuring improvements in employee welfare quantitatively.
