Background of the Study

Flexible working arrangements (FWAs) have gained popularity in recent years as a response to changing employee needs and advancements in technology (Kumar & Singh, 2023). These arrangements, which include options such as remote work, flextime, compressed workweeks, and part-time employment, are designed to offer employees greater autonomy over their work schedules and locations. FWAs are particularly relevant in today’s business environment, as they can enhance work-life balance, reduce stress, and ultimately improve employee productivity (Musa & Olalekan, 2024).

Stanbic IBTC, a major player in Nigeria’s banking sector, has implemented various flexible working arrangements to improve employee satisfaction and increase productivity. With a significant presence in Kaduna State, the bank is committed to improving employee well-being while ensuring operational efficiency. However, the effect of FWAs on employee productivity in the context of Stanbic IBTC has not been extensively studied, and understanding this relationship is crucial for the bank to optimize its human resource policies and remain competitive in the industry.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of flexible working arrangements on employee productivity at Stanbic IBTC in Kaduna State, with a focus on understanding the benefits and challenges associated with FWAs for both employees and employers.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing adoption of flexible working arrangements, there is limited research on how these arrangements affect employee productivity, especially in the banking sector. At Stanbic IBTC in Kaduna State, while FWAs have been implemented, there is insufficient understanding of how these arrangements contribute to or hinder employee productivity. Addressing this gap is essential for optimizing workplace policies and ensuring that FWAs lead to positive outcomes for both employees and the organization.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the types of flexible working arrangements implemented at Stanbic IBTC in Kaduna State.

  2. To assess the impact of flexible working arrangements on employee productivity at Stanbic IBTC.

  3. To identify the challenges associated with flexible working arrangements at Stanbic IBTC.

Research Questions

  1. What types of flexible working arrangements are offered by Stanbic IBTC in Kaduna State?

  2. How do flexible working arrangements affect employee productivity at Stanbic IBTC?

  3. What challenges do employees and management face in implementing flexible working arrangements at Stanbic IBTC?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Flexible working arrangements significantly improve employee productivity at Stanbic IBTC.

  2. Employees with access to flexible working arrangements have higher job satisfaction and productivity than those without.

  3. There are significant challenges in implementing flexible working arrangements that affect employee productivity at Stanbic IBTC.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Stanbic IBTC employees in Kaduna State, analyzing the impact of flexible working arrangements on their productivity. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the difficulty in measuring productivity across different departments and job roles.
