Background of the Study

Workforce diversity refers to the inclusion of individuals from various demographic backgrounds, including differences in race, gender, ethnicity, age, and cultural perspectives, within an organization. The growing emphasis on workforce diversity is due to its potential to enhance creativity, improve problem-solving capabilities, and increase organizational competitiveness (Cox & Blake, 2023). Human Resource (HR) policies play a crucial role in fostering diversity by creating inclusive hiring practices, equal opportunities, and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion.

Lafarge Cement, one of Nigeria's leading cement manufacturers, operates in Yobe State and has made significant efforts to implement HR policies that promote workforce diversity. However, despite these efforts, challenges remain in fully realizing the potential benefits of a diverse workforce, including overcoming unconscious biases in recruitment, promoting equitable career development opportunities, and addressing workplace discrimination.

This study aims to appraise the HR policies at Lafarge Cement in Yobe State and evaluate their impact on workforce diversity, focusing on how these policies influence employee satisfaction, productivity, and organizational performance.

Statement of the Problem

While Lafarge Cement has implemented various HR policies aimed at promoting workforce diversity, there is limited research on the effectiveness of these policies in creating a truly diverse and inclusive work environment. Understanding how HR policies affect diversity, inclusion, and employee outcomes is crucial for identifying areas where improvements can be made. This study seeks to fill the gap by evaluating the impact of Lafarge Cement’s HR policies on workforce diversity in Yobe State.

  2. What impact does workforce diversity have on employee satisfaction and productivity at Lafarge Cement in Yobe State?

  3. What strategies can Lafarge Cement implement to improve workforce diversity and inclusivity?

Research Hypotheses

  1. HR policies at Lafarge Cement significantly contribute to the promotion of workforce diversity in Yobe State.

  2. Workforce diversity positively influences employee satisfaction and productivity at Lafarge Cement in Yobe State.

  3. Implementing more inclusive HR policies will improve workforce diversity and organizational performance at Lafarge Cement in Yobe State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the HR policies of Lafarge Cement in Yobe State and their impact on workforce diversity. Limitations include challenges in measuring diversity-related outcomes such as inclusivity, as these can be subjective. Additionally, the scope of the study is limited to one location and may not reflect the experiences of employees at other Lafarge Cement plants.
