ABSTRACT
This study investigates the lipid-modulating effects of extracts from different parts of the African mesquite tree (Prosopis africana) in a rat model. The experiment employed a randomized controlled trial design with four groups: a control group and groups receiving extracts from leaves, bark, and pods of the mesquite tree. Baseline characteristics including body weight, serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL levels were similar across all groups at the start of the study, ensuring comparability. After 28 days of treatment, significant reductions in serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels were observed in all extract groups compared to controls, with the leaves extract demonstrating the most pronounced effects. Moreover, increases in HDL levels and decreases in LDL levels were noted across all experimental groups. Statistical analyses confirmed the efficacy of mesquite tree extracts in improving serum lipid profiles, with no significant differences observed between the various extract groups. These findings suggest that bioactive compounds present in African mesquite tree extracts may offer therapeutic benefits for dyslipidemia, potentially reducing cardiovascular risk factors. Further research is recommended to isolate and characterize specific compounds responsible for these effects and to conduct clinical trials in humans to validate these findings.
