ABSTRACT: Exploring the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in vocational education for smart manufacturing is essential for preparing students for the future of industry. This study aimed to evaluate the integration of IoT in vocational training programs, identify the critical skills and competencies developed through IoT-based education, and assess student readiness for employment in smart manufacturing. A survey design was chosen to gather comprehensive data from students enrolled in vocational programs focused on IoT and smart manufacturing. The sample size consisted of 250 students from various technical institutions specializing in industrial automation and manufacturing technologies. Purposive sampling was utilized to select participants with a background in engineering and technology. The case study was conducted at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Findings indicated that IoT-based vocational education significantly enhanced students' technical skills, provided real-time data analysis capabilities, and prepared them effectively for smart manufacturing roles. Students reported high levels of satisfaction with the training, emphasizing the relevance and practical applications of IoT in modern manufacturing. It was recommended that vocational training institutions expand their IoT curricula and establish collaborations with industry partners to ensure training programs are aligned with current and future industry needs.
