ABSTRACT: The role of vocational education in supporting the development of smart cities is increasingly crucial as urban areas adopt more advanced technologies. This study aimed to evaluate how vocational education can equip students with the necessary skills for smart city development, identify key competencies required for such roles, and assess student readiness for employment in smart city projects. A survey design was chosen to gather comprehensive data from students enrolled in vocational programs related to smart city technologies. The sample size consisted of 250 students from various technical institutions focusing on urban planning, ICT, and engineering. Purposive sampling was utilized to select participants with a background in technology and urban studies. The case study was conducted at the University of Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria. Findings indicated that vocational education significantly improved students' understanding of smart city concepts, enhanced their technical skills, and prepared them effectively for employment in smart city projects. Students expressed high levels of satisfaction with the training, emphasizing the relevance and applicability of the skills acquired. It was recommended that vocational training institutions expand their curricula to include more comprehensive smart city modules and foster collaborations with industry stakeholders to ensure training programs remain relevant and impactful.
