ABSTRACT: This study evaluates the effectiveness of competency-based assessment in technical schools, examining its role in aligning educational outcomes with industry standards and enhancing student learning and skill development. Competency-based assessment focuses on measuring students' mastery of specific skills and knowledge required for successful job performance in technical fields. The objectives were to (1) assess the benefits of competency-based assessment in technical education, (2) identify challenges and best practices in implementing competency-based assessment, and (3) propose recommendations to optimize the use of competency-based assessment in technical schools. A survey research design was chosen to gather data from students, educators, and industry professionals, exploring their perceptions and experiences with competency-based assessment methods. The sample size comprised 200 participants, selected through purposive sampling to include stakeholders from technical schools and industry partners across Nigeria. The case study focused on Enugu State, known for its robust technical education system and proactive approach to curriculum development. Findings indicated that competency-based assessment enhanced students' skill mastery, critical thinking abilities, and readiness for employment. Effective practices included competency frameworks, performance-based tasks, and industry certification pathways. Recommendations included standardizing competency assessment criteria, providing professional development for educators on assessment methods, and fostering collaboration with industry to validate assessment standards.
