ABSTRACT: This study examines innovations in assessing practical skills in technical education, focusing on the methods and tools that enhance the evaluation of students' hands-on abilities. The objectives were to (1) identify innovative assessment methods currently used in technical education, (2) evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in measuring practical skills, and (3) propose strategies to further improve the assessment of practical skills. A survey design was chosen to collect data from students, educators, and industry experts, providing diverse perspectives on assessment practices. The sample size included 200 participants, selected through a purposive sampling technique to ensure relevant insights from experienced individuals. The case study focused on Kaduna State, Nigeria, known for its technical education institutions. Findings indicated that innovations such as digital portfolios, simulation-based assessments, and competency-based evaluation frameworks significantly improved the accuracy and relevance of practical skill assessments. However, challenges such as the need for technical infrastructure and training for educators were noted. Recommendations included investing in assessment technologies, providing professional development for educators, and developing standardized guidelines for implementing innovative assessment methods across technical education programs.
