ABSTRACT: This study investigates innovations in competency-based education (CBE) models in technical fields, focusing on approaches that emphasize skill mastery and real-world application. The objectives were to (1) explore current CBE models being implemented in technical education, (2) assess the effectiveness of these models in improving student outcomes, and (3) identify challenges and opportunities in the adoption of CBE. A survey design was chosen to capture detailed insights from educators, students, and industry professionals involved in technical education. The sample size included 160 participants, selected through a purposive sampling technique to ensure that respondents had direct experience with CBE models. The case study was conducted in Edo State, Nigeria, a region recognized for its technical education initiatives. Findings revealed that CBE models significantly enhanced student engagement and skill acquisition by focusing on practical, real-world tasks and continuous assessment. However, challenges such as the need for substantial curriculum redesign, the requirement for extensive instructor training, and resistance to change were identified. Recommendations included investing in professional development for educators, fostering industry partnerships to align competencies with market needs, and developing flexible, modular curricula that can be easily adapted to changing industry standards.
