Abstract: This study assesses the relevance of traditional trades in modern vocational education in Nigeria, examining the role of traditional skills and craftsmanship in contemporary vocational training programs, cultural preservation, and economic sustainability. Traditional trades encompass indigenous knowledge, artisanal skills, and cultural practices passed down through generations, contributing to cultural heritage preservation and community livelihoods. The research aims to (1) explore the significance of traditional trades in Nigerian vocational education contexts, (2) assess the integration of traditional trades into modern vocational training curricula and practices, and (3) propose recommendations for enhancing the recognition, preservation, and integration of traditional trades in vocational education to support cultural sustainability and economic development. A survey research design is justified to gather insights from vocational educators, cultural heritage experts, and community stakeholders familiar with traditional trades and vocational education practices. A sample size of 300 participants will be selected through purposive sampling to represent vocational instructors, cultural preservationists, and community leaders in Plateau State. Case studies will examine successful initiatives integrating traditional trades into vocational education and their impact on cultural preservation and economic empowerment. Findings indicated varied perceptions of traditional trade relevance, identified challenges such as curriculum integration complexities and generational skills transmission gaps, and highlighted the role of community partnerships and cultural revitalization efforts in enhancing trade preservation and vocational education alignment. Recommendations include promoting intergenerational knowledge transfer, establishing certification frameworks for traditional skills, and fostering collaboration between vocational institutions and cultural stakeholders to ensure the sustainability and integration of traditional trades in modern vocational education frameworks.
