BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Education is a crucial instrument for social and economic development. It provides individuals with knowledge, skills, and values necessary to contribute to the growth and development of their society (Adhikari et al., 2019). The field of education is fast changing with the advent and acceptance of methodologies like the virtual classroom during the past few years. More specifically, technological changes, globalization, and the ever-increasing need for flexible and accessible educational alternatives have driven the changes. As teaching moves online, the mode of instruction gets altered, and in an ever-fluctuating landscape wherein educational institutions are grappling with the vagaries as well as opportunities thrown up due to online teaching, it becomes imperative to understand the kind of an impact that this mode of instruction creates upon the students. In addititon, in 2020, the impact of COVID-19 has been significant in this area as well as other areas of activity, but its effect has been particularly strong in teaching and learning (Iglesias-Pradas et al 2021). Recent research in the field has explored the effectiveness of online teaching and the challenges faced by both educators and students in virtual learning environments. By contextualizing these findings within the unique setting of the University of Ibadan, this study aims to provide nuanced insights into the impact of online teaching on students in the context of a diverse and dynamic academic institution.
New recent research in the field has dealt with measuring the effectiveness of online teaching and finding challenges that both educators and students face in a virtual learning environment. This study thus seeks to give these more nuanced details to the effect of online teaching on students placed in the University of Ibadan.
The University of Ibadan, a premier institution in Nigeria, stands at the intersection of tradition and modernity, navigating the complexities of integrating online teaching into its established academic framework. This study aims to critically analyze the effects of online teaching on students within the University of Ibadan, considering factors such as academic performance, expenditure and consumption, and overall satisfaction.
1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT
Education is seen as important because it is a powerful driver of development, and one of the strongest instruments for reducing poverty and improving health, gender equality, peace and stability. Hence the method it is been passed across is also of utmost importance and changing times have made the methods also change across borders. Online or blended teaching has shown significant growth and therefore has become an integral part of the educational options as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic (Wahid 2023) and higher institutions and countries in Africa are not left out of this (Palvia et al, 2018).
It is of research value to know if online teaching affects the student’s life and academic performance positively or negatively, to know if it changes its consumption and expenditure patterns as a result of purchase of airtime, data subscription, feeding, accommodation and other essentials. This study aims to the impact of online teaching on students. The results of this study will provide insights into the impact of online teaching on students and will contribute to the understanding of the relationship which is critical for the development of policies and programs aimed at improving education deliverables.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Main Research Question: Does online teaching have an impact on students in the University of Ibadan?
Specific Research Questions:
Is there a relationship between online teaching and students’ academic performance of University of Ibadan students?
Does online teaching have an impact on consumption and expenditure of University of Ibadan students?

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main objective of this study is to analyse the impact of online teaching on students within the University of Ibadan.
The specific objectives includes to:
Examine the relationship between online teaching and students’ academic performance of University of Ibadan students.
Investigate the impact of online teaching on consumption and expenditure of University of Ibadan students.
Understand the cost implications of online teaching on the students of University of Ibadan.
RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
In order to achieve the above objectives, the following hypotheses have been developed.

H0: Online teaching has no significant impact on consumption and expenditure of students.
H1: Online teaching has significant impact on consumption and expenditure of students.
H0: There are no significant cost implications of online teaching on the students.
H1: There are significant cost implications of online teaching on the students.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
In the light of many institutions adopting online teaching all around the world and universities in Nigeria are not left out. Many research studies have been carried out all around the world since the rapid adoption of online teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it has been seen that so much have not been done in Africa considering our peculiarities of low technology adoption, literacy rate as well as other problems.
It is of interest to understand the holistic impact of online teaching on students and to what extent, how it affects their academic performance, consumption and spending patterns as well as the cost implications it has on their lives. The results of this study in respective to the correlation and magnitude of the impact of online teaching on students would help inform policy makers and university administrators the most effective mode of teaching that would enable students be their best at every point in time.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The study seeks to analyze the impact of online teaching on University of Ibadan students. This study will make use of primary data through administration of adequately structured questionnaires to collect data from about 300 respondents. To ensure randomness of the sample, respondents will be from different departments and faculties in the University of Ibadan.
1.8 ORGANISATION OF STUDY
This study will be structured into five chapters. The first chapter presents the general introduction of the study, problem statement and objectives of the study, as well as its justification. Chapter two includes the background of the study, literature review (theoretical review, methodological review and empirical review) as well as conceptual framework. Chapter three covers the theoretical framework and methodology adopted for the study. Chapter four presents the data analysis and the interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. Finally, chapter five summarizes the study's findings, conclusions and recommendations. The recommendations presented in this chapter are based on the results of the study and serve as a guide for policymakers, academic institutions and stakeholders.
