Background of the study

Vaccination stands as one of the most significant advancements in modern medicine, playing a pivotal role in preventing infectious diseases and safeguarding public health. However, the effectiveness and safety of vaccines can vary across different populations and geographic regions. In the context of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA) within Bauchi State, Nigeria, the evaluation of new vaccines becomes paramount to address the unique healthcare needs and challenges faced by the local population. The effectiveness of vaccines refers to their ability to prevent targeted diseases or infections within a given population. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccine effectiveness is defined as "the ability of a vaccine to prevent disease among vaccinated individuals in the real-world population" (WHO, 2020). It is a crucial variable in assessing the impact of vaccination programs on disease prevention and control. Safety pertains to the absence of adverse effects or harms associated with vaccine administration. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines vaccine safety as "the minimization of risks and the identification of adverse events following immunization" (CDC, 2021). Ensuring the safety of vaccines is essential for maintaining public trust in immunization programs and preventing vaccine hesitancy. New vaccines are those that have recently been developed, licensed, or introduced into the market for public use. These vaccines may target emerging infectious diseases, novel strains of existing pathogens, or previously unaddressed health threats. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines new vaccines as "those developed through innovative technologies or to combat newly emerging infectious diseases" (NIH, 2020). Evaluation of new vaccines involves assessing their effectiveness and safety in real-world settings. The effectiveness and safety of new vaccines are interdependent variables that influence each other. Higher effectiveness often correlates with improved safety, as vaccines that effectively prevent diseases with fewer adverse effects are considered safer for use. Conversely, compromised safety can undermine the effectiveness of vaccines by eroding public trust and confidence in vaccination programs. Therefore, evaluating both effectiveness and safety is essential to ensure the success and sustainability of immunization efforts in Tafawa Balewa LGA. Several factors can influence the effectiveness of vaccines, including vaccine coverage rates, population immunity levels, vaccine characteristics (e.g., antigenic composition, adjuvants), and disease epidemiology (Harrison et al., 2020). Additionally, the presence of circulating vaccine-resistant strains or waning immunity over time can impact vaccine effectiveness. Factors influencing vaccine safety encompass vaccine ingredients, manufacturing processes, administration techniques, individual susceptibility to adverse reactions, and pre-existing medical conditions (Rota et al., 2021). Furthermore, public perceptions, media coverage, and vaccine misinformation can influence vaccine safety concerns and vaccine acceptance within communities. In conclusion, researching the effectiveness and safety of new vaccines in Tafawa Balewa LGA is imperative to inform evidence-based decision-making, enhance public health outcomes, and mitigate the burden of infectious diseases in the region.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Despite advancements in vaccine development, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA) in Bauchi State, Nigeria, faces persistent challenges in accessing and delivering new vaccines to its population. The effectiveness and safety of these new vaccines remain uncertain within the unique socio-economic and healthcare landscape of the region. Limited access to quality healthcare services, coupled with potential vaccine hesitancy and emerging infectious disease threats, exacerbates the urgency to evaluate the performance of new vaccines in Tafawa Balewa LGA. Therefore, there is a critical need to conduct comprehensive research to assess the effectiveness and safety of new vaccines within this specific geographical context, aiming to inform evidence-based strategies for improving immunization coverage and public health outcomes in the area.
