Background of study
Gender and inequality have a complicated relationship. Gender norms throughout society influence and reinforce the diverse roles and behaviors of female and male, children and adults. These are social norms that define acceptable behavior for both male and female students (e.g., in some societies, being male is associated with taking risks, being tough and aggressive, and having multiple sexual partners). Gender roles and behaviors differ, resulting in inequities in which one gender gains power at the expense of the other. As a result, women are perceived as subordinate to men and have a lower social position in many nations, giving men more influence and decision-making power than women. Gender disparities have a significant and far-reaching impact on society. They can, for example, lead to gender disparities in health and access to health care, employment and promotion chances, income levels, political engagement and representation, and education. Inequalities in gender frequently enhance the chances of male committing acts of violence against female students. Traditional ideas that men have the right to govern women, for example, expose women and girls to physical, emotional, and sexual aggression by men. They also make it more difficult for those who are harmed to leave abusive circumstances or seek help. An inning methods of promoting gender equality and their effectiveness in reducing violence towards female students. There are various sorts of ways that right of students are being infringed on
Statement Of Problem
The discriminatory treatment of girls is depicted in a number of ways. These are, acquisition of education, attainment of employment opportunities, empowerment opportunities, deprivation of the right to property, deprivation of having a say in decision making matters, deprivation of expressing their viewpoints and perspectives, discouraged from participation in social, economic, cultural, and political activities, remaining confined within households, implementing household chores, and taking care of the needs and requirements of their family members. Furthermore, they also experience discriminatory treatment regarding health and medical facilities and even food items. Good quality food was provided for the male members and the females were given simple food. The prevalence of discriminatory treatment against women regarding these aspects is not only a barrier to their progress, but also to the development of the communities and nation. Regardless of the jobs in which women and girls are engaged, whether they are involved in the management of household responsibilities, or are pursuing education, or are engaged in employment opportunities or assisting their parents in family business. It is vital for them to obtain equal rights and opportunities. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that they provide equal rights and opportunities for their girls. Girls should be given equal rights and opportunities regarding acquisition of education, health care facilities, medical facilities, diet and nutrition, property, wealth, resources, and so forth. Making provision for equal rights and opportunities for girls would promote their well-being and empowerment opportunities. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the role of the centre for gender and development in the protection of the rights of female students in Nigeria universities.
