BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A student's career choice is one of the most crucial decisions he will make in his life. This decision will have an impact on them for the rest of their life. A career is incredibly important in an individual's life since it dictates the pattern of his or her income and influences the individual's personality and perspective on life. As a result, a career is a lifelong quest for achievement. It is the sequence of key positions held by a person throughout the course of his life. The term "career" is broadly defined as all similar tasks people play in ensuring a livelihood, including students, parents, employees, retirees, and employers. According to Hewitt (2010), a person's career is the sum of his or her experiences in which he or she learns about and prepares to engage in work as part of his or her way of life. In a nutshell, a person's career is the sum of all the labor he or she does to make a living during his or her lifetime. It is thus beneficial to think as far as possible in order to achieve this fit. As a result, everyone must make a professional decision. It is extremely difficult to make a career decision, especially when one's livelihood is at stake. In the face of rapidly changing technology and the information sector, choosing a career has become a difficult task for students. According to the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary (2005), a career is a job or a succession of jobs that you do during your working life. As a result, choosing a profession is essentially the same as choosing a lifetime job.Personality, interests, self-concept, identity, globalization, socialization, role models, social support, and accessible resources such as information and finance all influence career choice (Kerka 2000). Religion, peer group, and some environmental influences were identified by Hewitt (2010) in their inquiry into other factors that could influence profession choice. All jobs, however, have their own set of curriculum requirements, personality traits, and personal qualities. Before an individual can be recognized as qualified for a given vocation, all of these must be thoroughly evaluated Hewitt (2010). To keep up with changing socioeconomic conditions, one must not only perform proper career planning but also conduct extensive job studies before making a career decision Hewitt (2010). According to Hewitt (2010), most people are influenced by their parents' career preferences, others flow with the career opportunities that their educational choices have provided, some choose to follow their passion regardless of how much or little it will pay them, and others choose the career that pays well. According to Mcquaid and Bond (2003), a number of characteristics such as ethnic background, years in school, and degree of success might influence a student's judgment of suitability for a certain job. Students, on the other hand, are identified by a combination of personal abilities, personality type, and other characteristics Mcquaid and Bond (2003). As a result, variables influencing profession choice might be intrinsic, extrinsic, or both. A number of elements have been discovered to influence students' perceptions of their suitability for a certain vocation. Parental support and encouragement, for example, have been demonstrated to have an impact on profession choice. To satisfy their parents, children may pick what they want Mcquaid and Bond (2003). According to Mcquaid and Bond (2003), the choice of a vocation is influenced by parents, friends, and demographic variation. He also said that a student's career decision may be influenced by their parents' educational and occupational backgrounds because some students may consider whether or not to pursue their parent's occupation. What students watch on television may have an impact on their job choices. Some jobs require you to have a personality that matches the job's requirements. When these children graduate from high school, however, some of them go into careers that are completely unrelated to the one they chose and trained for. As a result, the importance of a guidance counselor in schools cannot be overstated. The purpose of this study is to look into the factors that influence senior high school students' profession choices in Rivers State, with a focus on a few schools in the Obio Apkor Local Government Area.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
With the introduction of digital technology, the emergence of the post-industrial revolution, and employment competitiveness, career choice has become a sophisticated science. The issue of secondary school pupils' profession choices has prompted a slew of inquiries and responses from academics. The problem has always been a delicate one that must be handled with care. Secondary school pupils have not followed a clear process for deciding on a career path. Secondary school pupils should have the opportunity to investigate all of their options in order to make a well-informed professional decision. In the past, it was standard practice to locate feudalism and turn it into a family affair, with the son of a blacksmith destined to become a blacksmith and a feudal born a leader. Industrialization and post-industrialization have made it possible for the average person to become wealthier if they have the necessary skills and knowledge. To keep up with changing socioeconomic conditions, one must not only perform proper career planning but also conduct extensive job study before making a career decision. (Kerka, 2010).
