EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
Crime is said to be as old as society itself and it is a diver’s concept which changes chronologically and geographically, based on the social norms or values of a particular society at a given time. The definition, form and concept of crime, therefore, change with passage of time and regimes and behavioural dimensions of society. Some crimes, in course of time, become obsolete and some assume new and broader dimensions. A normative definition views crime as deviant behaviour that violates prevailing norms standards prescribing how humans ought to behave normally (Matthew, 2018). This approach considers the complex realities surrounding the concept of crime and seeks to understand how changing social, political, psychological, and economic conditions may affect changing definitions of crime and the form of the legal and penal responses made by society. Accordingly, definitions pour out from various criminologists and sociologists depending on the times they live in.
