ABSTRACT
This study was conducted on influence of socio-economic characteristics of parents on secondary school students‟ academic performance in business studies in Kaduna State.Three specific objectives, three research questions were stated to guide the study and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study covered eight hundred and fifty twoJSS two business studies‟ students in three public junior secondary schools, in Kaduna State with a sample size of one hundred and seventy business studies‟ students. Tables, frequency and percentages were used to analyzethe demographic data, mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the research questions while t-test was used to test the three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance.The result of the analysis revealed among others that parents‟ level of education and occupation influenced academic performance of business studies‟ students in government junior secondary schools in Kaduna State. In view of this, the study concluded that failure in junior secondary schools‟ examinations (JSCE) will continue to rise if parents do not employed their socio-economic status on their children upbringing in school. In line with the conclusion, the study recommended among others that, parents should give proper attention to their children, monitor their activities in and out of school and provide home tutors and ensure that home work is done and provide along with learning materials as this would go a long way in improving the academic performance of their wards in business studiesin Kaduna State.
