ABSTRACT
The study analysed teachers‟ perception of strategies for improving the use of instructional materials in agricultural science in senior secondary schools in Kano State, Nigeria. Five specific Objectives were stated, five research questions and five null hypotheses were stated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study used descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 424 agricultural science teachers from 413 senior secondary schools in Kano State. The entire population was studied as a sample using purposive sampling techniques. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The instrument was designed by the researcher with a reliability co-efficient of 0.71 obtained by testre-test methods. The researcher personally distributed the 424 copies of the questionnaire to the respondents. All the questionnaire were properly filled and returned. Data collected were coded and analysed using Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16. Table of frequencies and percentages was used to summarise and present the bio-data of respondents. Mean score and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was employed to test the five null hypotheses at significance level of 0.05. The study revealed among others that training mode such as organizing conferences, workshops, symposiums, excursion, in-house discussion, enlightenment campaign, long vacation programmes and seminars had significantly improved the use of instructional materials for the teaching of agricultural science in senior secondary schools in Kano, State, Nigeria. In line with the findings, it was concluded that training modes, adequate motivation, good administrative approaches, access, and maintenance practices greatly improved the use of instructional materials for the teaching of agricultural science in senior secondary schools in Kano State, Nigeria. Recommendations were made by the researcher among which included that Kano state Ministry of Education should organize training modes such as workshops, seminars, conferences, excursions, in house discussions and long vocation training programs for agricultural science teachers on the use of instructional materials to update their professional excellence.
