EXCERPT FROM THE STUDY
Poverty has been defined using a host of variables. Most studies found that poverty is caused by a lack of adequate income to purchase essential goods and services. Others perceive poverty as a result of factors such as education, health, life expectancy, child mortality, and so on (Adeyeye, 2017), defining the poor based on consumption and spending criteria. Further, Benedict (2019) also connects poverty to privileges, which he defines as "the several packages of commodities and services over which one has command, taking into account the methods by which such items are purchased (for example, money, coupons, and so on) as well as the availability of the essential goods."
