Marriage is an important aspect of the human culture. It is the only legalized method for human continuity. This is because marriage affords individuals the ideas and resource fusion to achieve better goals as partners. It also allows individuals the right for engenderment. This is important as marriage also drives harmony to a society. Individuals can involve in tribal, inter-tribal and racial marriages. This actions fosters peace and harmony within societies and communities. Furthermore, marriage is important for family cohesion. Family cohesion is the degree of commitment that a union is expected to yield to that particular nuclear or extended family. However, nowadays the society has continue to record cases of distant marriage or separated marriages. Distant marriage happens to be the focus of this study. Distant marriage seem to negate the essence of marriage and this action gives room for erroneous activities accrued to family such as infidelity and improper child upbringing, just to mention a few. It is on this premise that this study is undertaken to examine the effect of distant marriage on family cohesion.

This study will be beneficial to married couples as it will reveal possible factors that leads to distant marriage. This knowledge will help young couple in decision making.

1.8 Definition of concepts
Distant marriage: This is a kind of marriage where the man or woman live apart but are not divorced or legally separated.
Cohesion: This is an act of togetherness. In this study it means the bond that exist in a marriage.
Family: This is a union of man and woman who agrees to come together legally or traditionally as husband and wife.
