ABSTRACT

This study determined lead concentrations in seven types of food sold by hawkers in Zaria and environs. Lead is a heavy metal that serves no useful purpose in the human body. The food samples were coded A –G respectively and the locations were coded A1 – H1. The samples were analyzed using Atomic Absortion Spectrophotometric Method (AAS), after appropriate treatment. Lead concentrations of sample A ranged from 0.03 – 0.16mg/L; B ranged from 0.2 – 0.18mg/L; C ranged from 0.01 to 0.22mg/L; D ranged from 0.04 to 0.16 mg/L; Lead concentration of E ranges from 0.02 to 0.04mg/L;F ranged from 0.12 to 0.13mg/L; and G ranged from 0.01 to 0.02mg/L. The concentrations of Lead in the food samples were consistently high for locations D1 and E1. This can be due to the human activities around the areas.
